reading about raptors

In honor of our recent interview with Mal Muratori and Lexie Smith of the Vermont Institute Of Natural Science, it seems fitting to highlight some books for older children that feature birds of prey. Below are three of our favorites!

My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George (ages 8-12)

Following a young boy, Sam, as he leaves his New York City apartment, and spends time living in the woods of the Catskill Mountains with his unlikely companion, Frightful, the peregrine falcon. Sam learns a great deal about nature from observation, and also visits the local public library in order to augment his knowledge about how to survive on his own. Skills such as hollowing out a tree for shelter, building a fire,  foraging, fishing, and setting traps become part of his new life.  But eventually, Sam must consider the challenge of  balancing a wild and free lifestyle with his natural desire to reconnect with his family.

Be prepared for plenty of heartwarming photos throughout this informative and engaging book!
